Oil painting is a form of expressing your own emotions, all you need is a little direction to achieve the results you are after. Remember, anyone can paint and get fantastic results using Transparent Paint, and the Grisaille style of painting. With one stroke of the brush, you will achieve many varied shades of colour, without the need to pre-mix your paint. You will obtain a depth and clarity that pure colour has to offer, and no muddied by undue mixing. Painting with the Grisaille method, you can also easily fix your mistakes in your initial composition, without have to mix or match any colours at all. Most artists who take up oil painting for the first time, finish up with a flat chalky painting. Their paintings have no depth to them; they simply don’t realize how easily they could have painted a bright and vibrant scene using a few simple steps. What we will achieve in this workshop is an understanding and appreciation of the Old Masters way of doing things. We will also play with some of the more modern methods of producing paintings. Using wet on wet techniques. Our subjects will vary from floral to seascapes, and concentrate on the best ways of producing bright and colourful paintings. You may bring your own subject matter if you wish. Open to allcomers, 16 years and over.
Garry Purcell’s passion for art started when he was quite young. At the age of 14 he entered his first art competition and won the section with a black pencil sketch of a horse. This further fuelled his passion for art and he later travelled to England and spent 18 months taking in the culture and museums, plus leaving behind some mural wall paints. His sketches and paintings from those years are lost somewhere in Europe and sadly no records were kept of them. Returning to Australia his interest declined in entering competitions, although he did enter one recently. In 2003 this time for a Christmas card and was awarded first place. He now mainly does commission paintings and is always on the lookout for new subject matter. A small collection of his paintings can be found here on his online gallery. He endeavours to implement what he sees with his eyes onto the canvas. He enjoys colour and tends to over-exaggerate it in his paintings, while still trying to keep within the realms of probability and realism.
