Grafton City is situated 360 kilometres south of Brisbane and 670 kilometres north of Sydney. The city is bisected by the Clarence River and was declared a city in 1855. Grafton City owes much of its present day beauty to its early city fathers, who in 1866 decreed, “It is highly desirable that trees should be planted under proper regulations in the streets and other public places of the town”. The trees, including the renowned Jacaranda, now dominate the city and together with the rich legacy of early colonial buildings, carefully preserved, make the city a major interest to the visitor. Grafton is easily accessible with air, rail and road services and an hour’s drive will take you to one of the many beaches, national parks and other scenic attractions. April and September in Grafton are usually delightful; a light jacket may be required for evenings.
